Previously a design-conscious parent’s worst nightmare (and every child’s favorite furnishing), the rickety, utilitarian bunk bed is a thing of the past. We love a loft or bunk’s ability to maximize space in city apartment, bring young family and friends together at summer and weekend homes, and create drama in rooms with vaulted and high ceilings. From our jaw-dropping triple-decker custom bunk bed designed for a young family’s Berkshires ski house to sophisticated bunk rooms in Nantucket, New York City, Aspen and beyond, here are a few of our favorite recent designs.
Call it the bunk that broke the internet. This triple-decker bed was created for a sky-high bedroom shared by sisters in a Williamstown, MA ski house. It’s the scene for frequent slumber parties with friends, cousins, and the girls’ brother, whose room is connected by a secret door. With three full beds and a top-level twin our architectural designers engineered this white oak structure for stability, safety and comfort – but it looks great, too.
