25×25: The 25 Events That Shaped Our Last 25 Years

Over the past two-and-a-half decades, Workshop/APD has grown beyond our founders’ imaginations – in size, in scope, and in talent. We’ve narrowed down the biggest milestones to just 25 (one for each year that we’ve existed as a firm) that contributed most to our evolution over the years. Keep reading for a reflection on our defining moments.

1999: Andrew Kotchen & Matt Berman start Workshop/APD 

In 1999, Matt Berman and Andrew Kotchen joined forces to create Workshop/APD. The two had been friends since their Lehigh days, reconnecting at the turn of the century to build an architecture firm and march into the new millennium following the beat of their own drum.

2001: First employees hired 

After two years of successful partnership, the two began hiring their first employees. The trappings of a true collective “workshop” began to form.

2005: Workshop /APD receives honorable mention in High Density on the High Ground competition

Sponsored by Architectural Record and Tulane University, the firm was recognized for its entry “MOD-SET: From Transience to Permanence.” Early in the firm’s history, Workshop/APD began to extrapolate from its background in coastal design to devise solutions for climate change-affected areas.

2006: Wins Global Green 

Sponsored by Brad Pitt and Global Green USA, the Sustainable Design Competition for New Orleans invited 125 designers to create affordable, efficient, and healthy housing that could become a prototype for the rebuilding of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. Workshop/APD’s “GreeN.O.LA” won, earning the firm global acclaim.

2009: Awarded contract for Building 92 at the Brooklyn Navy Yard 

In collaboration with Beyer Blinder Belle Architects & Planners, Workshop/APD was chosen to transform BLDG92 at the Brooklyn Navy Yard into a premier tourist destination for one of the borough’s fastest developing sites.  Preserving key elements of the 1857 building while modernizing it for the future, this project would be an opportunity to make our mark on history.

2010: First product collaboration with Aster Cucine 

Multidisciplinary to our core, a product collaboration with Aster Cucine brought Workshop/APD’s crafted modern approach to the Timeline kitchen collection. This milestone represents the first of many guest designer spots and product collaborations.

  1. 2010: Established dedicated interiors department 
  1. Bringing us closer to the multi-disciplinary firm Workshop/APD is today, full-service design studio with the ability to translate our style throughout the entire home extended our practice verticals and client offering.
  1. 2011: Move to current office on W 38th St.  
  1. From a nearby location in Midtown Manhattan, Workshop/APD’s staff walked office supplies and computer monitors to the new space on West 38th street. We’re still there today, expanding our footprint within the building as our firm grew to three floors and a roof terrace with iconic Empire State Building views
  1. 2011: Thomas Zoli joins as principal architect 
  1. Thomas J. Zoli joins Workshop/APD, bringing architectural firepower and incredible experience across residential, commercial, institutional, corporate and public verticals to the firm. Since joining Workshop/APD as Director of Architecture in 2011, Thomas has overseen all the firm’s architectural output, bringing a technical mastery of space, light, technology and design to projects across disciplines.
  1. 2012: Workshop/APD is awarded the Printing House project, construction begins 
  1. Another groundbreaking opportunity to restore a piece of New York City history, the Printing House condominium allowed Workshop/APD to design in our signature style at a larger scale than ever, making our first foray into the NYC development scene.

      1. 2013: Minneapolis office established 
      1. When longtime Workshopper Zachary Helmers moved to Minnesota, we saw a strategic opportunity to expand our footprint to the Midwest with our first satellite office. 
    1. 2014: Andrew Kotchen & Matt Berman curate “the New Nantucket” exhibition 
    1. A curated collection of modern Nantucket work held at Audrey Sterk’s Gallery established Workshop/APD as part of Nantucket’s Modernist vanguard. Being tapped to reflect on our first 15 years felt like the turning point – from then on, our designs on island would take a decidedly modern approach. 
    1. 2015: Talde Miami and TAKA restaurants open 
    1. As we expanded into the world of hospitality, two outstanding restaurant projects reached completion in the same year.
  1. 2015: Workshop/APD named to the Ocean Home 2016 Top 50 Coastal Architects
  1. for the first time, an honor that the coastal publishing powerhouse has bestowed on the firm each year since.  
  1. 2016: 88&90 Lexington Sales Launch 
  1. Workshop/APD was employed to unify the residences at 88 and 90 Lexington Ave, two adjacent and wildly different buildings that were converted from offices decades prior.  
  1. 2018: Workshop/APD named to the Interior Design Power Grid
  1. cementing our place among the top 100 development giants of New York City.
  1. 2019: Introduction of Associates and Associate Principal programs, creating a tier of leadership with an eye to the firm’s long-term outlook.
  2. Recognizing leaders who guided Workshop/APD through a period of strategic growth, the associate program has since expanded to include 11 members of our senior staff.

    1. 2020: Launches rug collaboration with Warp & Weft, named as Arteriors guest designer
    1. As our product capabilities grow internally, Workshop/APD becomes a recognized name in the trade through two major product partnerships.
    1. 2021: AutoCamp Cape Cod opens and is awarded an Interior Design Best of Year award for Best Small Resort;
    1. since then, the firm’s work with AutoCamp has garnered numerous honors including a Gold Key Award for AutoCamp Catskills and a spot on the AHEAD 100 List.
  1. 2022: Workshop/APD Homes Book 
  1. Our first monograph, Workshop/APD Homes: Architecture, Interiors, and the Spaces Between, was released in partnership with Rizzoli.  A labor of love three years in the making, the book features 20 iconic residential projects across 306 pages. 
  1. 2022: New Workshop/APD Minneapolis office opens, NYC offices expand  
  1. to a third floor plus penthouse “Workshop Lab” and roof terrace, and our new product showroom. A venture in the works since before the pandemic, Workshop/APD’s Workshop Collection showroom began to take shape in Fall 2021. As our firm’s product portfolio grew, we decided the logical next step would be inviting professional colleagues and clients to experience the furniture offering in a physical space. 
  1. 2023: Named to Elle Decor A-List, 
  1. a career-defining recognition of our collaborative team’s hard work and exceptional creativity. 
  1. 2023: Launch of Workshop Collection 
  1. When the firm applied its design expertise to custom furnishings used to solve common yet complex design problems, we saw an opportunity to share the solutions with the trade. Producing a limited selection of favorite pieces, the signature lineup of Workshop Collection was born.  
  1. 2024: Named to 1stDibs 50 
  1. Perfectly timed with the firm’s 25th Anniversary, Workshop/APD was named to the 2024 1st Dibs 50, a celebration of design and architecture firms working “at the peak of their powers,” elevating craftsmanship, creativity, and inspiration, and enriching lives through design.
