This spacious triplex apartment on New York’s Upper West Side, the gut renovation of a choppy apartment that was originally a series of smaller artists’ studios, challenged our team to create a cohesive, elegant space for a family of five. The sophisticated, functional home also boasts a number of dramatic, playful architectural features including a curved glass, wood and metal staircase and sky-high dual climbing walls in the turret playroom.
Front Entrance
Removing the wall that once enclosed the staircase, this entryway dramatically opens and brightens, allowing natural light in through the second-floor skylight.
Living Room
Once we relocated the staircase, the living room took on a new geometry with a new wall enclosing the leftmost seating area. Across the room, we replaced the existing mantel with a wall-to-wall slatted casing that contains the cabinets and fireplace.
Stair Landing
Where the previous stair terminated in a liminal, flat storage area, we activated the space to become a book nook, complete with a cozy chair and shelves that form a library.
Kitchen
By cleverly incorporating an existing support beam into the new kitchen island, we created more usable space with fewer obstructions. Sleek millwork conceals appliances and storage with warm wood, while a clean, black hood and grey stone countertops add industrial cool.
Dining Room & Family Room
This open-plan living space carries the materiality out from the kitchen, creating a unified look
Primary Suite
Combining two units required some skillful rearranging. Here, we flipped the primary bedroom and bathroom in order to add another bedroom on this floor.
Playroom
Our team had a vision for this third-story turret that went above and beyond the floor, maximizing the vertical space with dual climbing walls over a pit of pillows.
